What is an Employer-Sponsored Visa?

An Employer-Sponsored Visa is a work visa that requires a formal sponsorship by an approved Australian employer. These visas allow businesses to hire skilled foreign workers to fill labor needs in critical industries.

Types of Employer-Sponsored Visas

1. Subclass 482 – Skill in Demand (SID) Visa

​The Skills in Demand (SID) visa (subclass 482) allows Australian employers to sponsor skilled workers from overseas to fill positions where local labor is insufficient. This visa facilitates temporary employment in Australia, with the duration depending on the nominated occupation and stream.
Key Requirements:
  • Nomination by an Approved Sponsor: You must be nominated for a skilled position by an employer who is an approved sponsor.
  • Occupation on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL): Your nominated occupation must be listed on the CSOL, which identifies occupations eligible for the SID visa.
  • Relevant Work Experience: A minimum of 1 year of full-time relevant work experience in your nominated occupation or a related field is required. ​
  • Skills Assessment: Depending on your occupation, you may need to undergo a skills assessment to demonstrate your competency.
  • English Language Proficiency: You must have suitable English language skills for your nominated occupation. Specific requirements may vary, especially under Labour Agreements.

2. Subclass 186 – Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) Visa

The Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) visa – Subclass 186 is a permanent residency visa for skilled workers sponsored by an Australian employer.
Key Requirements:
  • Sponsored by an approved Australian employer.
  • Occupation must be on the Medium and Long-Term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL).
  • Meet skills assessment, work experience, and English requirements.
  • Must be nominated for a full-time, ongoing position.

3. Subclass 494 – Skilled Employer-Sponsored Regional (Provisional) Visa

The Skilled Employer-Sponsored Regional (Provisional) visa – Subclass 494 allows skilled workers to work in designated regional areas of Australia for up to 5 years. This visa provides a pathway to permanent residency after meeting specific requirements.
